Seismic hazard and risk scenarios for Barcelona, Spain, using the Risk-UE vulnerability index method

Abstract: The Vulnerability Index Method, in its version developed in the framework of the European project Risk-UE, has been adapted and applied in this article, to evaluate the seismic risk for the city of Barcelona (Spain) through a GIS based tool. According to this method, which defines five damage states, the action is expressed in terms of the macroseismic intensity and the seismic quality of the buildings by means of a vulnerability index. The probabilities of damage states are obtained considering a binomial or … Show more

“…This proposal standardizes the RISK-UE curves by empirical damage models, consistent with the fuzzy set theory. Similar to the qualitative definitions interpreted through membership functions χ proposed by previous studies [23,25] for the vulnerability categories of the EMS-98 scale, RISK-UE considers a series of membership functions for each structural configuration. A function χ defines the belonging of single values of a certain parameter to a specific set: the value of χ is 1 when the degree of belonging is reasonable; between 0 and 1 shows that the value of the parameter is infrequent but possible; and χ…”

“…Since the previous described version [18] a series of reviews have been performed in the definition and numerical evaluation of these behavior modifiers [23,25,28,29], calibrating the influence of several dispositions (i.e., sloping ground difference of height between close buildings, irregularity in plant or elevation, etc. ), in the seismic analysis of buildings.…”

“…Over the last few decades, seismic risk evaluation, as well as that for other natural hazards, is of increasing concern and considered to have an essential role in the urban planning and risk management of prone areas (Campos Costa et al 2009;Lantada et al 2010) such as the Azores archipelago. The development of vulnerability assessment studies, in urban centres or rural areas, fundamentally aim to mitigate seismic risk, as well as identify building fragilities.…”

“…Seismic risk in urban areas is defined as the convolution of 'seismic hazard' and 'seismic vulnerability' [1,2]. While studies on the seismic hazard analysis (SHA) provide a conceptual framework for evaluating the probability of the occurrence of the hazard, the 'vulnerability assessment' is used to determine the likely effects of hazards on human beings and property within a particular area [3].…”
