“…Previous studies showed that SSI systems with s=1 have a much higher effective damping ratio than those with greater slenderness ratios (e.g. s=2, 3 and 4), which is more pronounced in structures with higher structure-to-soil stiffness ratio a 0 [23,42]. Therefore, it is suggested that the difference caused by slenderness ratio in the total structural strength demands is mainly attributed to the effective damping of the SSI system x ssi , which increases as the slenderness ratio is reduced.…”

“…The material damping of the soil half-space is also modelled by augmenting each of the springs and dashpots with an additional dashpot and mass, respectively [22]. In this study, the soil material damping ratio x g =5% was specified at the lowest Eigen-frequency w 0 of an SSI system, which can be calculated iteratively according to Veletsos and Nair [23] and Luco and Lanzi [24]. Frequency-dependent impedance functions proposed by Veletsos and Verbic [25] were used to derive w 0 , which was solved iteratively by increasing the frequency of vibration from zero (i.e.…”

“…In the case of soil-structure interaction (SSI), few empirical studies have been performed due to the limited availability of strong motion data from sites with instrumented structures and free-field accelerographs. In contrast, analytical formulations for SSI are numerous, ranging from complex, three-dimensional finite-element analysis procedures capable of incorporating fully nonlinear dynamic soil modeling [e.g., Borja (1992)] to simplified substructure techniques suitable for implementation in building codes [e.g., Veletsos and Nair (1975)]. While some sophisticated analytical models have been verified using recorded data from nuclear reactor structures or scaled models thereof [e.g., Valera et al (1977) and Bechtel Power Corporation (1991)], empirical studies incorporating a large number of building sites with strong motion recordings are lacking.…”
