Seismic monitoring of an Alpine mountain river

Abstract: The Canfranc underground laboratory (LSC), excavated under the Central Pyrenees, is mainly devoted to the study of phenomena which needs "cosmic silence." It also hosts a geodynamical facility, named Geodyn, which holds an accelerometer, a broadband seismometer, and two high-resolution laser strainmeters. During the routine processing of the seismic data, we detected an unusual spectral signature in the 2-10 Hz frequency band, which does not correspond to the typical sources of seismic noise and which can also… Show more

“…In the past decades, the potential of using acoustic and seismic signals for geomorphological gain has been explored in several studies (e.g. Bäzinger and Burch, 1990;Taniguchi et al, 1992;Govi et al, 1993;Rickenmann and McArdell, 2007;Burtin et al, 2008Burtin et al, , 2010Burtin et al, , 2011Gray et al, 2010;Hsu et al, 2011;Schmandt et al, 2013;Díaz et al, 2014;Roth et al, 2014;Chao et al, 2015;Barrière et al, 2015a). The approach makes use of the fact that the displacement of mass at the Earth's surface generates elastic seismic waves that propagate through the subsurface and can be recorded by acoustic or seismic sensors.…”

“…The Canfranc underground laboratory (LSC) is excavated in the rock under the Central Pyrenees Chain (Spain) (Figure ). Although it is mainly devoted to Particle Physics and Astrophysics, it also hosts a geodynamical facility [ Díaz et al ., ] capable of recording continuously the whole geodynamic spectrum, from near‐field seismicity to tectonic deformation, including Earth tides. The heart of the geodynamical facility are two laser strainmeters (interferometers), similar to those operating in Central Italy for about 20 years [ Crescentini et al ., ; Amoruso and Crescentini , ].…”

“…These latter produced valuable results on slow earthquakes [ Crescentini et al ., ; Amoruso and Crescentini , ], long‐period toroidal Earth free oscillations [ Park et al ., ], earthquake nucleation [ Amoruso and Crescentini , ], the free nutation of the Earth core [ Amoruso et al ., ], and the correlation between groundwater flow and deformation in a fractured carbonate aquifer [ Amoruso et al ., ]. For the moment, strain data from the LSC interferometers have been used to investigate the local link between groundwater flow and deformation [ Díaz et al ., ].…”

“…Hence it can reflect the effect of seismic events in stratum and some activities in the underground. One of the main tasks of the seismic positioning and monitoring system is to locate where the shock is [4][5][6]. Especially, the geophone array plays a key role in the system as it determines whether the system could work effectively.…”
