Seismic partitioned fragility analysis for high‐rise RC chimney considering multidimensional ground motion

Abstract: Summary In order to identify the vulnerable parts and areas of the high‐rise reinforced concrete chimney, this paper presents an effective method, which called partitioned fragility analysis. One 240‐m‐high reinforced concrete chimney was selected as the practical project, and its analytical model was created with ABAQUS software. The selected high‐rise chimney structure was divided into 17 parts, and then the damage probability of each part in different damage states was obtained with the fragility analysis c… Show more

“…According to the research of high-rise chimney [11,23], the PGA is selected as the IM and the DMs choose the compressive strain of the concrete and the tensile strain of the reinforcement. According to reference [24], the earthquake damage of the tower is classified into 5 levels, which are: basically intact (DS1), minor damage (DS2), moderate damage (DS3), severe damage (DS4), destruction (DS5).…”

“…According to reference [24], the earthquake damage of the tower is classified into 5 levels, which are: basically intact (DS1), minor damage (DS2), moderate damage (DS3), severe damage (DS4), destruction (DS5). In order to determine the damage level of the tower, four corresponding Limit States (LS) LS1-LS4 are needed to be defined, as indicated in Table 5 [11]. The selection of ground motions has a great influence on the IDA results.…”

“…In this method, finite element models are established and subjected to earthquake records. The analytical method has been employed by several researchers to develop fragility curves of different types of structures including ATC towers [7], bridges [8], tunnels [9], wind turbine [10], reinforced concrete chimneys [11], process towers [12], and masonry structures [13]. The hybrid method produces a realistic estimation for earthquake damage.…”

“…Minghini et al [12] analyzed a brickwork chimney and a shear failure mechanism of the upper part of the chimney damaged by the 2012 Emilia earthquake. Zhou et al selected an existing 240 m tall RC chimney as the research object and analyzed the seismic vulnerability curve of the chimney by considering structural damage [13], structural nonlinearity [14], and multidimensional earthquake [15] and evaluated and analyzed the vulnerability of the chimney structure.…”
