Seismic-Proof Buildings in Developing Countries

Abstract: The use of "ductile seismic frames," whose proper seismic behavior largely depends upon construction details and specific design rules, may do not always lead to effective seismic resistant structures, as dramatically denounced by the famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei in his artwork Straight. The artwork (96 t of undulating metal bars that were salvaged from schools destroyed by the 2008 Sichuan, China earthquake, where over 5,000 students were killed) is a clear denounce against the corruption yielding to shodd… Show more

“…Thus, local programs to reduce the social and structural vulnerabilities in the medium and long-term in ZIH are needed. There is a consensus among structural engineers that performance of constructions is enhanced by a regular geometry of the structure, avoiding soft stories, adequate foundations, and lightweight roofing, amid other factors (Laghi 2017;Murty 2005). Also, wood could be one of the more important and dependable construction materials because it is renewable and has high resistance to earthquakes (Salman and Hussain 2010).…”

“…The economic effectiveness of the investment depends on the material types and technology used (Nawrot, 2016) and the effective management of human resources in the construction process (Krynke, 2019). It is also important that building and engineering constructions are resistant to the effects of external factors and ensure the safety of users (Constantin and Nițescu, 2020;Zhelykh et al, 2022;Laghi et al, 2017;Chen and Zhang, 2022). For hydrological structures, safety and risks of those formed in the mountain landscapes of Georgia and calculat-ing the material and economic damage caused by the debris flow should be assessed and the crack has to be assessed in the book by Gavardashvili (Gavardashvili, 2022).…”

“…Recently with the advent of innovative structural systems, complex geometries and advanced construction techniques of building to handle earthquake resistant aspects also increased. The concept of box-type wall structures envisages a change of paradigm from the actual ductility-based Earthquake Engineering (centered on frame structures) toward a strength-based design, and this solution can easily yield to almost 100% safe buildings against earthquake [21]. According to Dixon (2017) [22], to make a structure more resistant to the lateral forces of an earthquake is to tie the walls, floor, and roof together to form a Super Structure and have an isolated foundation that becomes the Sub Structure.…”
