Seismic sequence analysis and reservoir potential of drowned Miocene carbonate platforms in the Madura Strait, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract: A B S T R A C TSeismic analysis of four Miocene carbonate buildups (the Porong, KE-11C, and BD buildups) in the Madura Strait region, Indonesia, shows that they are constructed of four seismic units (1-4). All the buildups are located atop an east-west-trending Oligocene fault block, which, through its uplift, favored the deposition and aggradation of shoal-water carbonates. Aggradation, platform narrowing, and backstepping of leeward reefs into the upper parts of individual buildups typify the growth profil… Show more

“…Gravity anomalies and well data show that in this part of the basin (located ~40 km to the east of Lusi) the sedimentary cover is thicker and hence Ngimbang Fm. is buried at least 1 km deeper 63,64 . Therefore, deep burial induced HC generation most likely occurred in the South Madura region.…”

(b) HC migration to the carbonates of the Kujung Fm., forming the accumulation within the Porong reefal structure, located 7 km to the north-east of Lusi 64 . The Porong-1 exploration well penetrated the top part of this potential reservoir revealing the presence of oil shows 26 (Fig.…”

“…Stratigraphic information for the Upper Jurassic succession substantially differs between the older wells and the two newer SLE wells. In the legacy wells, the Upper Jurassic interval was subdivided into Oxfordian, Rauracian and Astartian (Mikucka-Reguła, 1968;Urban and Wandas, 1968; see also Kutek, 1965). Since the late 1960s-early 1970s, the Rauracian and Astartian have been incorporated into the upper Oxfordian (e.g.…”

In contrast, relatively few seismic examples of Upper Jurassic carbonate buildups from classic, geologically well recognised western and central European northern Tethyan shelf and surrounding region have been published to date (e.g.…”
