Seismic velocities of the uppermost igneous crust versus age

Abstract: S U M M A R YSeismic refraction velocity data from the acoustic basement (called layer 2A) have been compiled for different mid-ocean ridges. The data from post-1970 studies show a strong correlation between velocity and basement age. Importantly, velocities double in less than 10 Myr for all ridges, but for older crust, up to 160 Myr in age, velocities do not increase significantly.

“…Grevemeyer and Weigel [1996] made such a compilation, and though they did not make a formal statistical analysis, the data do appear to support their conclusion that upper crustal velocities double within 5 million years and remain constant thereafter. These data further suggest that seismic velocities in old crust are appreciably lower than the average velocity in layer 2B.…”

“…Consequently this study has several objectives. One is to expand the compilation of Grevemeyer and Weigel [1996] by scouring the literature for additional data and including more data from downhole logs and borehole experiments. A second is to make a rigorous test of the hypothesis that most of the increase in seismic velocities occurs in <10 million years.…”

“…, NOBEL (~) [Christeson et al, 1994a], and this study (*). The best fitting curve from Grevemeyer and Weigel [1996] (thin) and this study (thick) are shown. Results older than a decade (i.e., ROSE, Capricorn and early 504B) were not used in the least squares inversion and are marked by an unfilled symbol.…”

“…Recently, Grevemeyer and Weigel [1996] and Carlson [1998] compiled the most comprehensive set of compressional wave velocities for acoustic basement since Houtz and Ewing [1976]. Grevemeyer and Weigel [1996] approximate the relationship be-…”
