Selected Body Measurements of Women Aged Sixty-five and Older

Abstract: One-hundred fourteen white and 91 black women volunteers from Tallahassee, Florida, senior citizen's activity centers were studied to determine if elderly ambulatory women are adequately represented in the garment-sizing system. Thirty-three body measurements were taken on each subject, whose ages ranged from 65 to 96, with a mean of 73.912. Statistical analyses of these 33 measurements used descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson Product Moment Correlations (r), factor analysis, partial correlations, and mul… Show more

“…The researchers were interested in further identifying specifically which body measurements among those taken contribute more to satisfaction and dissatisfaction. Some major body areas, where significant differences in measurement were identified in Part I, as well as areas consistently identified as problems in previous research, (Hoffman, 1970;Patterson & Warden, 1984) were selected for further review (bust, waist, abdomen, full-hip, and upper-arm). The five body areas and specific related body measurements were: (a) Bust Area: high-bust, full-bust, front-bust-arc, neck-to-bust point, cross-back; (b) Waistline: waist, frontwaist arc-standing, front-waist arc-seated, stature, and weight; (c) Abdomen: abdominal-extension, front-abdominal-arc-standing, front-abdominal-arc-seated, stature, and weight; (d) Full Hip: abdominal-extension, full-hip, maximum-thigh, back-hip-arc-standing, total-crotch-length, frontcrotch-depth, sitting-spread, front-abdominal-arc-seated, and weight; and (e) Upper Arm: full-bust, armscye, upper-arm, cross-back-width, and armscye depth.…”

“…For instance, apparel fit was reported as the major reason for older women's dissatisfaction with apparel by numerous previous researchers (e.g., Bartley & Warden, 1962;Brunn, 1983; Grey, 1968;Patterson & Warden, 1984;Peiper, den, 1984;Spuriell & Jernigan, 1982;Woodson & Horridge 1990); and more variability in girth than vertical measurements (Patterson & Warden, 1984;Bader, 1983). …”
