Selection of a suitable data set and model for the estimation of genetic parameters of the weaning weight in beef cattle

Abstract: Abstract. The objective of this paper was to select a suitable data subset and statistical model for the estimation of genetic parameters for weaning weight of beef cattle in the Czech Republic. Nine subsets were tested for the selection of a suitable subset. The subsets differed from each other in the limit of sampling criteria. The most suitable subset satisfied these conditions: at least 5 individuals per each sire, 5 individuals per HYS (herd, year, season), 2 sires per HYS, and individuals per dams that h… Show more

“…Therefore, animal species could be prevented from adequately increasing body weight and body framework size on the one hand, and milk production on the other. The influences of the sire × year interaction or the sire × herd interaction on the growth abilities of beef cattle were not demonstrated in the Czech Republic (Vostrý et al, 2007). A one-sided increase in calf weight is not desirable for greater ease of calving in terms of direct or maternal effect.…”

“…Pre-weaning growths were defined by average daily gains. Only animals that were descendants of a sire with 5 or more offspring, sires that had offspring in at least two contemporary groups (Herd-Year-Season: HYS), dams with two or more offspring, and bulls born within contemporary groups (HYS) exceeding at least 5 animals were considered (Vostrý et al, 2007). Statistical model.…”

“…Each animal possessed an 88-100 % gene share of the breeds concerned. Data were adjusted so that the components of variance among all considered effects would be estimable (VOSTRÝ et al 2007). The data set comprised:…”

“…Considerable maternal (indirect) genetic effects on production traits have been reported in mammals (BRADE and GROENEVELD 1999, MANIATIS and POLLOT 2002, NÄSHOLM 2004, KESBI et al 2008, REINSH and KALM 1995, VOSTRY et al 2007) and poultry , PAKDEL et al 2002, SCHÜLER et al 1996. By contrast to many livestock species, there are few studies on maternal effects in ducks.…”
