Selection of elite parents and crosses for seed yield and its components using combining ability analysis over the three environments in safflower (Carthamus tinctorious L.)

Abstract: Thirty crosses developed through line × tester mating design were evaluated along with parents in three environments to estimate gca and sca effects of parents and crosses, respectively for yield and its contributing traits. Based on consistent performance over three environments in safflower (Carthamus tinctorious L.) genotypes, BHIMA, GMU 3876, GMU 3863, GMU 7351, GMU 2757, AKS 08R and AKS CMS 2B were found to be good general combiners for yield and most of yield contributing characters. Hybrids, AKS CMS 2A … Show more

“…Whereas, two hybrids viz., AKS CMS-2A × AKS-1731 and AKS CMS-3A × GMU-7448 were significantly superior for the traits seed volume weight and the number of capsules per plant. A similar result has also been reported earlier by Ahmad et al (2016) and Thorat and Gawande (2021) for both traits in safflower. A hybrid AKS CMS-2A × AKS-6891 followed by AKS CMS-3A × GMU-2273 exhibited good sca effects for the trait seed yield per plant in a desirable direction.…”

“…The general combining ability of the all parents in terms of head number, head diameter, number of seeds per head and 1000 seed weight were insignificant statistically (Table 3a). The present results confirm the findings of Golkar et al (2012), Kose (2017), Kanoje et al (2018) and Thorat and Gawande (2021). GCA effects of the parents in terms of the seed yield and quality traits were given in Table 3b.…”

“…Similar results were reported earlier by Kose (2017) and Kanoje et al (2018). In addition, Thorat and Gawande (2021) determined that the SCA values ranged from -2.145 to 2.145 in terms of oil content. It can be said that the reason for this difference is that the genotypes used belong to different geographical origins.…”

“…Different varieties of diallel crosses exist, however, in terms of the number of reciprocal crossings, half diallel crosses are more manageable for breeders than full diallel analysis 7 . Combining ability analysis is an effective tool for identifying superior hybrid parents with high general combining ability (GCA) and progenies with improved specific combining ability (SCA) 45 . It is also useful for measuring the genetic worth of parents and crossings in terms of gene activity in quantitative character inheritance and exploitation and breeding 13 .…”
