Selection of prime mover for combined cooling, heating, and power systems based on energy savings, life cycle analysis and environmental consideration

Abstract: Selection of prime mover type was investigated for use in combined cooling, heat and power systems. Selection was determined from comparison of performance criteria for economic, energy and emissions savings. Simulations were run for three different types of prime movers in one climate zone and compared to a reference case with a typical separate heating and power system in the same climate zone. A hybrid load following method was implemented, with a suggested improvement. Performance parameters were compared … Show more

“…They examined the system improvement by means of the system sizing and selecting of different operational strategies. In another study, Roman et al investigated the various types of prime movers including the ICE, micro‐turbine, and phosphoric acid fuel cell for using in the CCHP systems. They ran simulations for the prime movers in one climate zone and compared the results to a reference case with a typical SP system.…”

“…Equations to determine the GHG emissions [e.g., carbon dioxide (CDE), nitrogen oxides (NXE), and methane (ME)] have been set as well. Moreover, methods to calculate the annual cost savings and primary energy consumption (PEC) can also be represented with appropriate equations and are presented in [31]. All of these equations to calculate the performance parameters are presented in this section.…”

“…This work found PV panel is the best PM and GT is the worst when every primary criterion (3E+society) are segmented into 16 to 5 sub-criteria. Roman and Alvey (2016) provided following hybrid load operation-based selection method among ICE, MT and phosphoric acid FC. However, the selection is only one layer, so it can only provide the selection in each sub-criteria.…”
