Selection of relevant dietary indicators for health

Abstract: Objective: To define a set of dietary components that are relevant determinants for health in Europe. The selected components are intended to serve as nutrition indicators for health in the European Health Monitoring Programme and, as such, must be limited in number, relevant to health in Europe and practical for all involved countries with respect to data gathering and comparability of data. Design: Major nutrition factors were determined by reviewing relevant epidemiological and clinical literature in nutrit… Show more

“…The main aim of the project was to assess the habitual consumption of vegetables, potatoes, fruit, bread and fish with a unified method in the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as to rank individuals in order to estimate for example, regular, low and high consumers. The methodological aim was to produce and validate a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for the Nordic and Baltic countries that would effectively record the frequency of consumption of some foods suggested by the EU/EFCOSUM (European Food Consumption Survey Method)group as dietary health indicators (Steingrímsdó ttir et al, 2002).…”

“…The choice of vegetables and total fat was motivated by the desire to illustrate the effects for one food group and one nutrient both belonging to the relevant nutrition indicators identified in the EFCOSUM project (Steingrímsdó ttir et al, 2002). To evaluate and compare the efficacy of the methods we needed a sufficiently large number of repeated short-term measurements.…”

“…As a first step it is recommended to (find funds to) carry out a small pilot study starting with making consumption data of vegetables, fruit, bread and fish comparable. The choice of these foods follows logically from the list of most relevant dietary indicators identified by EFCOSUM (Steingrímsdó ttir et al, 2002). An important conclusion from EFCOSUM was that it is at present not possible to make existing food consumption data comparable at the nutrient level.…”
