Selection of Subtractive Manufacturing Technology Versus Additive Manufacturing Technology for Rapid Prototyping of a Polymeric Product

Abstract: The Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry has expanded steadily, occupying the market very quickly. New types of 3D printers have appeared and new types of polymeric and composite materials have been developed for these printers. Thus it passed very quickly from the stage in which the parts that were made by rapid prototyping (RP) only to be exposed (demonstration parts) to stage AM the parts are fully functional. Of course, the future of AM is still on the horizon, it is barely visible. The other technologie… Show more

“…We can find developments ranging from dental implants used in dentistry to prosthesis and a variety of medical devices [3,4]. Because the fit of customized items manufactured with traditional technologies required multiple post-processing procedures, currently with AM processes personalization is possible and may be achieved reasonably easily [5,6].…”

“…Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are recently very popular in many branches of industry due to the possibility of fast and accurate production of elements with various and complex shapes [ 1 ]. Among many materials, polymers have been recently widely applied [ 2 ] as they allow manufacturing structures both for everyday use and technical elements for testing prototypic solutions [ 3 ]. The variety of applications of AM elements causes them to be exposed to different mechanical loadings and environmental factors.…”

“…The main advantages of the material jetting technology are: higher manufacturing accuracy compared to other additive technologies, lower roughness, shorter part manufacturing times due to multijet printhead deposition, the possibility of using several model materials on the same part (model material mixing) and local variation of the mechanical properties of the resulting composite material [5]. The main disadvantages of this technology are related to the high manufacturing costs (cost of equipment, cost of materials) and the complexity of the maintenance process of the printing equipment (complete cleaning of the material flow circuits is necessary to avoid blockages and manufacturing imperfections) [7].…”
