Selection of Suitable Lubricant for Sliding Contact Bearing and the Effect of Different Lubricants on Bearing Performance: A Review and Recommendations

Abstract: The word bearing implies to an element of the machine which allows one moving or vibrating part to support other rubbing surfaces by which the load can transmit. Depending upon in nature and application of load, an extensive variety of different bearing is available. They can generally be categorized into two kinds of bearing such as rolling element bearing and a sliding bearing. Lubrication is required in the middle of rubbing surfaces, which enacts as a medium between the moving surfaces to diminish friction… Show more

“…These base oils are mostly synthetic oil, biological oil, and mineral oils. 58 In these base oils only, the nanoparticles sized on a scale of 1–100 nm are added. There are other oil additives that are used in combination with nanoparticles to increase the lubricity of the base oil.…”

“…Thermal and elastic effects on the performance of 170°p artial bearing were presented by Shamal et al 17 They discussed the circumferential effect of scratches on the static and thermal parameters. Non-Newtonian behavior of lubricant was studied by References [18][19][20] with couple stress fluid, [21][22][23] with nano-fluid. They showed an improvement in the performance of partial bearing as compared with Newtonian fluid.…”

“…Due to the widespread utilization of bearings, numerous efforts are being made by researchers in the direction of improving the performance behaviours of the bearing. Different techniques such as surface texture, use of bio-lubricants and lubricant additives have been widely investigated in order to improve the tribo-dynamic behaviours [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Nowadays, researchers are exploring the impact of the addition of nano -particles of the size of the order of 10-100 nm in the lubricants on the performance of journal bearings.…”
