Selection of Superior Inbred Progenies toward the Common Bean Ideotype

Abstract: Core Ideas Partitioning of the progenies effect within populations has several advantages. FAI‐BLUP index capitalizes the progenies × growth seasons interaction. The selected inbreed progenies showed favorable genotypes for the target traits. Genetic breeding towards the common bean ideotype can accelerate the cultivar release. ABSTRACTThe goal of breeding programs is selection toward the ideal plant type. In this study, field experiments were performed to select common bean inbred progenies that maximize the … Show more

“…Germination and seedling traits, however, are usually multicollinear. The FAI-BLUP, a multi-trait index based on factor analysis and ideotype design, proposed by Rocha, Machado, and Carneiro (2018), is used in this study; it combines factor analysis and genotype-ideotype design by using a multi-trait approach free from multicollinearity and has been successfully used for multi-trait selection of genotypes for several purposes (Oliveira et al, 2019;Rocha et al, 2019;Silva et al, 2018;Woyann et al, 2019).…”

“…In addition, the GY increase (2.05%) was substantial. The FAI-BLUP index has been used extensively in the application of genotype selection in different crops such as soybean (Woyann et al, 2019), bean (Rocha et al, 2019), and sorghum biomass (Silva et al, 2018). It has the advantage to consider genotypic correlations free from the presence of multicollinearity and without the need to establish economic weights for traits.…”

“…The FAI-BLUP index technique that involves the estimation of multi-trait index, prediction of genetic effects with mixed models, and the estimation of genetic values using REML/BLUP [ 20 ] is a potentially good strategy for selection of elite genotypes. Moreover, Silva et al [ 21 ], Oliveira et al [ 22 ], Rocha et al [ 23 ] and Woyann et al [ 24 ] opined the efficiency of this selection index technique for plant breeding. The FAI-BLUP index technique has also been utilized to assess the strengths and weaknesses of genotypes.…”
