Selection of the promising accessions of jamun (Syzygium cumini (L.) skeels) based on pomological characterizations

Abstract: Jamun (Syzygium cumini [L.] Skeels) is one of the most potential underutilized fruit crops. Here, phenotypic and pomological variability among 61 accessions of this species was investigated. Analysis of variance (p < .01) revealed significant differences among the accessions studied based on the traits recorded. Ripening date ranged from late June to mid‐July. Fruit color was purple in 13, dark purple in 30, and black in 18 accessions. Fruit weight ranged from 2.12 to 8.95 g, and fruit flesh thickness varied f… Show more

“…Three characters, including branch leaf length, branch leaf width, and branch petiole length, formed the PC3, accounting for 5.86% of the total variance. PCA has been previously used to investigate the phenotypic diversity of almond genotypes (Asgari & Khadivi, 2021; Khadivi, Goodarzi, & Sarkhosh, 2019; Khadivi, Safdari, et al, 2019; Sakar et al, 2020; Sakar, Yamani, & Rharrabti, 2019; Sepahvand et al, 2015) and other plants (Khadivi et al, 2021; Khadivi & Mirheidari, 2021; Khadivi, Mirheidari, & Moradi, 2022; Khadivi, Mirheidari, Saeidifar, & Moradi, 2022; Moradi et al, 2022; Safdari & Khadivi, 2021).…”

“…Based on the scatter plot generated using PC1 and PC2, the accessions were placed into four groups and most of them were placed in the center of plot (Figure 5). PCA has been previously used to investigate the phenotypic diversity of most plants (Khadivi et al, 2021; Khadivi, Mirheidari, & Moradi, 2022; Khadivi, Mirheidari, Saeidifar, & Moradi, 2022; Khadivi & Mirheidari, 2021; Moradi et al, 2022; Safdari & Khadivi, 2021).…”

“…The matured ripe jamun fruits have a slightly sweet and astringent taste and appear oblong or round in shape with dark purple and bluish‐black color due to the pigment anthocyanins (N. Ahmad et al, 2019). Black jamun is high in health‐beneficial substances such as anthocyanins, polyphenols, flavonoids, sugars, vitamin C and minerals, pectin, and protein (Katia et al, 2018; Khadivi et al, 2022). Anthocyanin includes cyanidin, glucoside, malvidin, and petunidin (Sharma & Dash, 2021).…”
