Selection Signature and CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Gene Knockout Analyses Reveal ZC3H10 Involved in Cold Adaptation in Chinese Native Cattle

Abstract: Cold stress is an important factor affecting cattle health, production performance, and reproductive efficiency. Understanding of the potential mechanism underlying genetic adaptation to local environments, particularly extreme cold environment, is limited. Here, by using FLK and hapFLK methods, we found that the Zinc finger CCCH-type containing 10 (ZC3H10) gene underwent positive selection in the Menggu, Fuzhou, Anxi, and Shigatse humped cattle breeds that are distributed in the cold areas of China. Furthermo… Show more

“…While some taxa may acclimate through phenotypic plasticity, or just modify their geographic distribution or behavior to avoid thermal stress [1,2], many others may evolve adaptive responses to local thermal regimes over generations via natural selection [3]. Such evolutionary adaptation to local thermal conditions has been verified across a wide variety of taxa [4][5][6][7][8], and is expected to play an important role in the survival of taxa with limited dispersals [3]. However, to date, the genetic basis of how various taxa acclimate these thermal stresses and adapt to environmental changes remains poorly understood.…”
