Selective Alcohol Electrooxidation by ZIF-8 Functionalized Pt/Carbon Catalyst

Abstract: Highly selective electrooxidation catalysts were synthesized by functionalizing a commercially available reference electrooxidation catalyst (Pt/Vulcan XC 72R) with a coating of the highly hydrophobic porous zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8, an adsorbent with high affinity for the extraction of aliphatic alcohols from water. According to cyclovoltammetric studies in alkaline media at 25 °C, the ZIF-8 functionalized catalyst shows a high selectivity for the electrooxidation of small alcohols such as ethanol… Show more

“…This synthesis protocol yields a Pt/Zn ratio in the composite material of 1:0.6. Such a composition shows high selectivity in alcohol electrooxidation in combination with a slightly reduced conductivity as reported by Eßbach et al The material is characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis is used to determine the distribution of the components in the composite (Figure S1, Supporting Information). SEM images are taken using a SU8020 (Hitachi) with an operating voltage of 2 kV.…”

“…To prepare the composite material, the synthesis of ZIF-8 described by Cravillon et al . is adapted. , 75 mg of the commercial catalyst Vulcan XC 72R/Pt with 10 wt % Pt and 11.3 mg Zn(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O are each suspended in 25 mL of methanol and dispersed for 20 min in an ultrasonic bath. Thereafter, 24.6 mg of 2-methylimidazolate is added to the suspension of the Vulcan XC 72R/Pt and the suspension is ultrasonicated again to ensure adsorption of the 2-methylimidazole on platinum .…”

“…The application of MOFs in methanol oxidation has also become a trend. Kaskel et al [122] used ZIF-8 functionalized Pt/ Carbon catalyst, and found the ZIF-8 functionalized catalyst only showed activity for the oxidating small molecules like methanol. This induced selectivity of ZIF-8 results from the strong adsorption of large and branched alcohols on the ZIF-8 scaffold resulting in retarded diffusion of these larger molecules through the MOF coating to the active Pt nanoparticle.…”
