Selective biosorption of thorium (IV) from aqueous solutions by ginkgo leaf

Abstract: Low–cost biosorbents (ginkgo leaf, osmanthus leaf, banyan leaf, magnolia leaf, holly leaf, walnut shell, and grapefruit peel) were evaluated in the simultaneous removal of La3+, Ce3+, Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+, Yb3+, Lu3+, UO22+, Th4+, Y3+, Co2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, and Sr2+ from aqueous solutions. In single metal systems, all adsorbents exhibited good to excellent adsorption capacities toward lanthanides and actinides. In a simulated multicomponent mixed solution study, higher selectivity and efficiency were obser… Show more

“…6a, at 2+ . In addition, soluble thorium ions such as Th 4+ were the dominant species in strongly acidic solution, while Th 4+ tended to precipitate out as Th(OH) 4 at higher pH, which were remained compatible with the outcomes of earlier studies [48][49][50].…”

“…According to Figure 3A, at pH < 4, thorium ionic species distribution in the solution were mainly involved of positively charged species which are Th 4+ , [Th4(OH)8] 8+ , [Th6(OH)15] 9+ , and Th(OH) 3+ . In addition, soluble thorium ions such as Th 4+ were the dominant species in strongly acidic solution, while Th 4+ tended to precipitate out as Th(OH)4 at higher pH, which were remained compatible with the outcomes of earlier studies (Baybaş and Ulusoy, 2011;Ding et al, 2019;Huang et al, 2018).…”

“…e spectrum range of FTIR was collected between 4000 and 600 cm −1 . e broad band at around 2919 cm −1 corresponds to C-H stretching vibrations of methyl group [27,28]. e peak at 1717 cm −1 can be attributed to CO stretching vibration of a carbonyl group (carboxyl (-COOH) and ethyl (-COOR) groups).…”
