Selective Decomposition Process and Mechanism of Si–O–Si Cross-Linking Bonds in Silane Cross-Linked Polyethylene by Solid-State Shear Milling

Abstract: Material recycling of silane cross-linked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) by the solid-state shear milling (S 3 M) technology could produce thermoplastic polyethylene. To take advantage of thermoplastic polyethylene from Si-XLPE, the de-cross-linked mechanism of Si-XLPE in S 3 M must be evaluated. The products prepared by the S 3 M technology were characterized using gel content, molecular weight measurement (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance ( 29 Si-NMR), and re-cross-lin… Show more

“…The mass ( W i ) of samples with different cycles was precisely weighed, and the weighed samples were extracted in acetone for 30 h. After extraction, the residue was taken out and placed in a fume hood to volatilize naturally for 24 h and then dried in a vacuum oven at 80 °C for 24 h. Finally, the mass ( W ) of the remaining material was accurately weighed. Hence, the gel fraction of the WEP could be obtained by gel fraction = W / W i × 100% . The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of the material was tested by an Avance II-400 MHz NMR spectrometer (Bruker, CHE) at a temperature of 25 °C using CDCl 3 as the solvent.…”

“… 15 17 In order to recycle XLPE in a simple and efficient way, solid-state shear milling (S 3 M) technology was used. 18 20 S 3 M equipment is based on a traditional Chinese stone pan mill, which is a mechanochemical reactor. With the unique three-dimensional shear structure, the materials in the equipment are subjected to shearing, squeezing, and stretching stress fields.…”

“… 21 The motion trajectory of materials is a spiral line, increasing the milling path, which can realize the functions of crushing, dispersing, mixing, etc. 21 It can be applied to destroy the cross-linked bond of silane cross-linked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) and achieve the fracture between some −C–Si– and −O–Si–O– bonds, 20 resulting in the thermoplastic processing of Si-XLPE. However, different from the heterogeneous cross-link network of Si-XLPE, the cross-linked bond of P-XLPE is the same as the C–C chemical bond of the main chain, so it belongs to a homogeneous network structure.…”

“…The motion trajectory of material is a spiral line, which has a long path enables the equipment to realize the functions of crushing, dispersing, mixing, etc [17]. This technology has been reported to destroy the crosslinked bond of silane cross-linked polyethylene (Si-XLPE) and achieved the fracture between some -C-Siand -O-Si-O-bonds [21], resulting in thermoplastic processable polyethylene. To further realize the valueadded application of XLPE powder, it is important to improve the processing performance of composites.…”
