“…A preliminary identification of the most obvious of these small resonances, occurring between 4.50 and 4.70 ppm, was made by comparison to 1 H NMR shifts reported for erythrulose, a linear tetrose that is analogous to the keto form of fructose at C1–C3. 27,28 This enabled assignment of H1a, H1b and H3 of the linear keto form. The presence of this isomer in the equilibrated mixture was supported by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (see Supplementary data).…”

“…Formula Classification proceeds the more carbohydrates are turned into a water insoluble tar discernable from an intensifying yellowbrown color of the solution [70]. It was shown, however, that the presence of borate [69,76] or phosphorylated carbohydrates [77,78] overcome that selectivity issue.…”

“…In particular, homogeneous and heterogeneous phosphates and borates exhibit low but sufficient catalytic activity towards the aldol reaction processes, and support the synthesis of erythrulose and 3-pentulose as a result of the in-teraction between CH 2 O and any simple monosaccharide. [52,64,86] The highest selectivity of 45-50 and 35-40 % for pentose and tetrose, respectively, is attained when using dihydroxyacetone as a monosaccharide substrate and a mixture of Na 2 HPO 4 and KH 2 PO 4 as a catalyst at nearly neutral pH. [86] The nature of the lower monosaccharide used as the second substrate does not affect the composition of the final mixture during this synthesis (when formaldehyde is used in a notable excess with respect to the monosaccharde) since the same carbanion corresponding to dihydroxyacetone is formed from glycolaldehyde and glyceraldehyde.…”

[52] When nickel phosphate molecular sieves VSB-5 are applied as a heterogeneous catalyst for the addition of CH 2 O to dihydroxyacetone, the aldol reaction proceeds slower and with lower selectivity for erythrulose (31 mol%) and 3-pentulose (24 mol%), and a notable part of the starting monosaccharide is isomerized to yield glyceraldehyde with the selectivity of 24 %.…”
