Self-Assembling Calix[4]arene [2]Catenanes. Preorganization, Conformation, Selectivity, and Efficiency

Abstract: A novel class of preorganized U-shape calix[4]arene clefts, dicationic salts 3a,c,e.2Cl, 3b.2PF(6)(), and 3f.2Br, consisting of one cone calix[4]arene and two bipyridine residues being linked by an aliphatic chain, have been designed and synthesized as precursors for self-assembly of calix[4]arene [2]catenanes by utilizing pi-stacking interactions between the hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Conformationally flexible 6.2PF(6)() and cone 10.2Cl, whose conformation is fixed by two propyloxy groups on the low… Show more

“…These compounds were synthesized according to the literature method 37,38 (Scheme 1). The synthesis of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25,27-bis(3-bromopropoxy)-26,28-dihydroxycalix [4]arene (2) was carried out by the reaction of tetra-tert-butylcalix [4]arene (1) with 1,3-dibromo propane and K 2 CO 3 in acetonitrile according to the procedure reported in the literature 39 (Scheme 2). The existence of thiol-thione tautomerism is known for the compounds 3a-e and 5f-k and generally one forms is predominant.…”

“…1) was prepared using Cax as the starting material. The first step involved the formation of compound 2 (CBr) from calixarene by refluxing the reaction mixture in acetonitrile for 48 h [32]. Initially, CBiPh was synthesized following the previously published procedure [33], i. e., by the reaction of CBr with 49-hydroxy-4-biphenyl carboxylic acid in the presence of KOH as a base and MeOH as the solvent.…”

“…A suspension of 25,27-bis(2-bromoethoxy)-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene [4] (1.9 g, 3 mmol) and bis(tetraethylammonium) bis(1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiol)zincate [5] (1.5 g, 2.1 mmol) was refluxed for 20 h in acetonitrile (300 mL) under a nitrogen atmosphere. After the removal of the solvent, the residue was dissolved in methylene chloride (100 mL) and washed with water, and dried over anhydrous MgSO 4 .…”

“…After the removal of the solvent, the residue was dissolved in methylene chloride (100 mL) and washed with water, and dried over anhydrous MgSO 4 . The crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography with dichloromethane/petroleum ether (2:3) to give the title compound (49% yield) as a yellow powder [6].…”
