Self‐Assembly and Metallization of Resorcinarene Microtubes in Water

Abstract: Amphiphilic resorcinarene‐based multiwalled microtubes, millimetres in diameter and centimetres in length, are generated in water. The thickness of the tube wall approaches 300 nm. Their self‐assembly properties are investigated using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic‐force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X‐ray diffraction, UV‐vis spectra, and Fourier transform IR techniques. From these studies, the structures critical for the self‐assembly of resorcinarene into micro… Show more

“…Benefitting from their abundant host−guest properties, they not only have been an integral part of supramolecular chemistry but also have played a vital role in the fields of polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, nanotechnology, etc. For example, most of the complicated supramolecular architectures, such as rotaxanes, catenanes, molecular shuttles, molecular switches, molecular machines, supramolecular polymers, supramolecular amphiphiles, and so on, are based on the host−guest chemistry of these macrocycles. They have been also employed to modify the surface properties of metal nanoparticles via noncovalent host−guest interactions, covering their applications in drug delivery, highly sensitive sensors, selective catalysis, and so on.…”

“…The synthetic accessibility and receptor properties of calix [4]resorcinarenes make them promising candidates as a capped agents for metal nanoparticles, in particular AgNPs. Earlier some examples of calix [4]resorcinarenes-capped metal NPs hydrosol were reported [19,[38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45].…”

“…Several hetero-oligomeric building blocks such as amphiphiles, 3,4 conjugated aryl macrocyles, 5 peptides 6,7 and carbohydrate derivatives 8,9 and aryl amides, 10 have been identified to self-assemble into hollow tubular structures under suitable conditions. Controlling the dimensions and characteristics of these tubes and their inner cavities however is not easy and is usually achieved in two ways.…”
