Self-Assembly of Light-Harvesting Crystalline Nanosheets in Aqueous Media

Abstract: A methodology leading to facile self-assembly of crystalline aromatic arrays in dilute aqueous solutions would enable efficient fabrication and processing of organic photonic and electronic materials in water. In particular, soluble 2D crystalline nanosheets may mimic the properties of photoactive thin films and self-assembled monolayers, covering large areas with ordered nanometer-thick material. We designed such solution-phase arrays using hierarchical self-assembly of amphiphilic perylene diimides in aqueou… Show more

“…The interfiber spacing is (4.4 AE 0.7) nm (lighter contrast areas), which corresponds to partially folded PEG chains. [9] The fiber width and interfiber distances are in good agreement with the center-to-center spacing of 6.2 nm revealed by FFT (Figure 3 A). Rheological measurements indicate a low degree of interaction between the fibers (see Figure S11 in the Supporting Information), despite their alignment observed in cryo-TEM.…”

“…Femtosecond transient absorption studies were carried out to probe the excited state dynamics of 1 G and 1 P. Laserpower dependence of the excited state decay reveals dissimilar exciton annihilation [9] behavior for 1 P and 1 G (see Figure S12 in the Supporting Information). The 1 G nanofibers exhibit a superior exciton hopping as evidenced by stronger power dependence, and may be attributed to the contribution of the J-aggregation mode and longer exciton lifetimes in 1 G, thus favoring efficient exciton hopping.…”

“…3a), suggesting that charge screening allows CA molecules to pack into crystalline assemblies. While perylene-based crystalline nanosheets have been reported previously 21 , our system represents a unique example of chromophore crystallization within a hydrogel. To corroborate our solution phase X-ray scattering results, we carried out 2D grazing-incidence X-ray scattering (GIXS) on calcium-containing gels dried on silicon substrates (Fig.…”
