Self-assembly of light-sensitive surfactants

Abstract: This review covers recent advances with an intriguing class of functionalised light-sensitive surfactants. The main chemical classes are described, and the photo-responses in interfacial and aggregation systems are discussed.

“…Usually, the solubility of the building blocks will be increased after the azobenzene changes from trans to cis form. [101][102][103] Sakai et al built up a model to control the reversible release of oily substances from the azobenzenecontaining micelles by light irradiation. When the azobenzene moiety in the middle hydrophobic part of the surfactant changed from trans to cis form, the micelle was destroyed and the small hydrophobic molecules preloaded in the micelle could be released under control.…”

“…The general concept is most interesting, as it suggests that one would be able to drive reversible adsorption-desorption phenomena, and stability-instability transitions in emulsions, for example. A recent review 41 presents some of the recent developments and challenges in this field. Some of the most detailed experimental work to date on these systems can be traced to the Hatton group 42 which studied non-ionic photosensitive surfactants consisting of a polar di(ethylene oxide) head group attached to an alkyl spacer of between two and eight methylene groups, coupled through an ether linkage to an azobenzene moiety.…”

“…Tuning the foamability (but not the foam stability) has been achieved by the temperature or UV irradiation [22] . If some results start to be collected on responsive self assemblies made of surfactants or gels (with reversible effects) [23] , almost nothing has been found yet with foams. Here, we report results on a simple and sustainable system which gathers a good foamability and an outstanding foam stability which can then be readily tuned to weak foam stability by changing the polymorphism of the system upon heating.…”
