Self-Awareness of Cognitive Efficiency, Cognitive Status, Insight, and Financial Capacity in Patients with Mild AD, aMCI, and Healthy Controls: An Intriguing Liaison with Clinical Implications?

Abstract: Objectives: This study compares objective measures of cognitive performance with subjective perception of specific performance on neuropsychological tests examining basic cognitive domains, including, for the first time, financial capacity. Additionally, differences in assessment between single- and multiple-domain aMCI, mild AD, and healthy elderly regarding insight are examined. “…Thus, for the first time we are able to rule out the presence of neurological impairment in the study or that SEI is an accurate reflection of the difficulties the participants encountered in the neuropsychological battery. Although direct cognitive performance was assessed (as indicated by the four neuropsychological tests), the objective psychometrically measured cognitive ability does not shape self‐perceptions such as SEI, a finding that is also reported in Greek older adults with mild cognitive impairments and healthy Greek older adults (Fragkiadaki et al., 2016 ; Giannouli & Tsolaki, 2022b ).…”

“…The inclusion criteria for participation consisted of (1) age ≥ 70 years ( de Rooij et al, 2009 ), (2) capable of speaking and understanding Dutch, (3) visiting the hospital for an outpatient consultation, (4) in possession of an e-mail address, and (5) an active care demand for breast cancer, hip, or knee osteoarthritis. One exclusion criteria was cognitive limitations (e.g., dementia or Alzheimer’s disease) since this could influence the awareness of their cognitive functions ( Giannouli & Tsolaki, 2022 ). All patients were asked for written informed consent before participating in the study.…”
