Multilevel inverters (MLIs) with switched-capacitor (SC) units have been a widely rehearsed research topic in power electronics since the last decade. Inductorless/transformerless operation with voltage-boosting feature and inherent capacitor self-voltage balancing performance with a reduced electromagnetic interference make the SC-MLI an attractive converter over the other available counterparts for various applications. There have been many developed SC-MLI structures recently put forward, where different basic switching techniques are used to generate multiple (discrete) output voltage levels. In general, the priority of the topological development is motivated by the number of output voltage levels, overall voltage gain, and full dc-link voltage utilization, while reducing the component counts and stress on devices for better efficiency and power density. To facilitate the direction of future research in SC-MLIs, this article presents a comprehensive review, critical analysis, and categorization of the existing topologies. Common fundamental units are generalized and summarized with their merits and demerits. Ultimately, major challenges and research directions are outlined leading to the future technology roadmap for more practical applications.

In this paper, a quadruple boost switched-capacitor multi-level inverter is proposed. The proposed structure utilizes a DC source, 11 switches, and a diode to achieve 17-level output voltage levels. This structure consists of three capacitors with the ability for self-balancing voltages. The capacitors achieve automatic voltage balancing through a series/parallel connection with the input voltage source. To control the switching pulses of the switches, level-shifted pulse width modulation (LS-PWM) strategy has been employed. A comparative evaluation has been performed between the proposed structure and structures presented in recent articles, considering various parameters such as voltage gain, number of DC sources, number of semiconductor devices, maximum blocking voltage (MBV), and total standing voltage (TSV). Considering this comparison, the lower number of semiconductor devices for generating a 17-level output with suitable voltage gain, and especially the cost-effectiveness of the structure, are the main advantages of the proposed configuration. In addition, a soft charging method has been employed to limit the inrush current of capacitors. Moreover, the power losses of the proposed structure have been investigated, indicating its acceptable efficiency. Finally, for the analysis and validation of the proposed structure's performance, an experimental prototype has been implemented and evaluated under various conditions. The results indicate satisfactory performance of the proposed structure under various stable and dynamic operating conditions.

This research proposes a novel multilevel inverter based on a new capacitor basic unit. Four capacitors are deployed in this unit to provide both even and odd voltage levels. Two‐cell proposed cascaded multilevel inverters and developed cascaded multilevel inverters are evaluated in order to improve the number of output levels generated. Calculations are made for all associated equations after determining the value of the necessary DC voltage source. Additionally, both inverters' switching tables and capacitor charge and discharge modes are fully explained. The merits and disadvantages of the proposed topology are then assessed by contrasting the cascaded multilevel inverter under consideration with a number of widely used multilevel inverters. The key benefit of the suggested architecture is the increase in the number of output levels produced while using fewer power electronic devices and DC voltage sources overall. The proposed one‐cell cascaded inverter is then utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed topology using the relevant equations, simulations, and experimental data. The simulation is carried out using the EMTDC/PSCAD software, and a lab prototype yields the experimental data.
