Self‐clotting method improves cell block preparation

Abstract: The results of the current study demonstrate that the self-clotting method is superior to the conventional needle wash method for FNA samples. Cancer Cytopathol 2018;126:190-9. © 2017 American Cancer Society.

“…The self-clot method that uses the own blood of the patient, contaminating the FNA sample was employed by Shi [40]. FNA material was air-dried to form a blood clot in a tube [40]. Skov and Skov [41] successfully tested plasma-thrombin CB method for programmed death-ligand 1 immunohistochemistry.…”

“…Furthermore, the cell pellets harvested by centrifugation are fragile and can be easily disrupted into small pieces and lost during processing. To overcome these limitations, many new techniques have been developed, such as (1) collodion bag technique, 10 (2) AFFECT, 11 (3) XCellent, a disposable CB device, 12 (4) Tissue coagulum clot method, 13 and (5) “Self-clotting” method 14 (Table 2). Two major strategies are applied in the above development of the CB techniques.…”

“…1 Tissue clot coagulum (TCC) is a self-clotting cell block method employed in fine needle aspiration procedures, which has been shown in previous studies to have the potential to optimize EBUS/TBNA specimen adequacy. 2,3 However, the performance of EBUS/TBNA-TCC in the real-world setting has not been elucidated clearly. In this brief report, we aimed to assess the performance of TCC compared to conventional normal saline rinse (NSR) cytology in terms of specimen adequacy in EBUS/TBNA procedures in our center.…”
