Self-determination theory: its application to health behavior and complementarity with motivational interviewing

Abstract: Mounting evidence implicates health behaviors (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, tobacco abstinence) in various health outcomes. As the science of behavior change has emerged, increasing emphasis has been placed on the use of theory in developing and testing interventions. Self-determination theory (SDT)-a theoretical perspective-and motivational interviewing (MI)-a set of clinical techniques-have both been used in health behavior intervention contexts. Although developed for somewhat different purposes and … Show more

“…35,36 Of course, the results of this study do not provide sensitive tests of any particular supporting theory since the theories are somewhat overlapping and, in some cases, offer similar guidance. For example, the goal-focused intervention could be viewed as compatible with both self-determination theory as well as motivational interviewing (see [55][56][57] for discussion of such overlap). Limitations of this study include a lack of significant differences in 7-day point prevalence abstinence measured at three months postintervention.…”

“…Further, as suggested by Weman [36], another potential avenue for future research is to test the possible synergy of combining person-centered care [37,38] and autonomy support in healthcare settings. Lastly, another future research direction is to test the proposed marriage of self-determination theory and motivational interviewing [39][40][41] in the context of rehabilitation.…”
