Self-fertilization:a potential fertilization mode in an estuarine sabellid polychaete

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The simultaneously hermaphroditic sabellid Laonome albicingillum Hsieh is the most dominant polychaete species in a mangrove estuary in northern Taiwan. Isolated individuals produced fertil~zed eggs which developed into normal larvae. Seminal receptacles were not found, indicating that individuals cannot store sperm. Ova, which were obtained directly from the coelom and inseminated by the same individual, developed into viable larvae and then settled successfully. The viability of embryos and newly s… Show more

“…and Pseudopolydora sp.) and the sabellid (Laonome albicingiilum) larvae constitute the majority of the macroinfaunal larval community and occur almost year round with peaks in spring (March to May) and fall (October to December) (Chang 1992, Hsieh 1995, 1997. Juvenile P. japonica can be found in the planktons; however, this is not the case for the other species.…”

“…japonica') than to H. diversicolor (Fong & Garthwaite, 1994). Moreover, in habitats such as estuaries, self-fertilization is commonly employed by sessile hermaphroditic organisms that are asynchronous broadcast spawners because sperm are not diluted or exposed to osmotic shock (Hsieh, 1997). When the allocation-return levels associated with being either male or female begin to diminish, individuals that shift additional reproductive resources to the other sex are selected and the simultaneous presence of both sexes in the same individual is considered favourable within an evolutionary context.…”
