Self-Healing Behavior of Y2SiO5 Toughened by SiC Particles

Abstract: Crack-healing effectiveness of Y2SiO5-based composites dispersed with 5 vol% SiC particles was investigated. Dense specimens of 5 vol% SiC/Y2SiO5 were fabricated by pulsed electric current sintering technique. Surface cracks were introduced by using a Vickers indenter to be a crack length of approximately 200 μm. Self-healing performance of SiC/Y2SiO5 composites via high-temperature oxidation in air was studied as a function of heat treatment temperature. As a result, surface cracks disappeared perfectly after… Show more

“…The starting powders used to fabricate the composites were single-phase Y 2 SiO 5 synthesized via a solid-state reaction technique 20) and a commercial high-purity SiC powder (0.32 µm mean particle size, 99.9% purity, Ibiden Co., Ltd). A slurry mixture consisting of Y 2 SiO 5 and 5 vol% SiC powder was ball-milled with ethanol and alumina balls in a plastic bottle for 24 h. The ceramic slurry was dried at 100°C for 10 h and milled manually by an alumina mortar to eliminate the agglomeration of particles.…”

“…We have proposed the self-healing ceramic composites which will be applied for EBC systems. 20) Crack-healing ability induced by thermal oxidation has been investigated for SiC particles in Y 2 SiO 5 matrix. Although a crack-healing function was discovered in SiC/Y 2 SiO 5 , influences of heat treatment condition such as time and temperature as well as mechanism of the crack-healing have not been investigated well.…”
