Self-Healing Juvenile Cutaneous Mucinosis

Abstract: Self-healing juvenile cutaneous mucinosis was encountered in a 15-year-old boy who presented with characteristic cutaneous findings and a clinical course of final spontaneous resolution. The interesting point is the presence of numerous nodules found in unusual locations. To date, nodules occurring on the long axis of the extremities have not been reported.

“…Table I summarizes the findings of our cases as well as those of other reported cases of SHJCM, and Table II shows the main clinical and histologic features of other diseases that are included in the differential diagnosis of SHJCM. [26][27][28][29] As is evident from our case histories, we experienced difficulty in making the correct diagnosis. Our aim is to assist other clinicians and pathologists in similar cases, especially when potentially misleading histologic features are present in a relatively rare condition.…”

The patients often had systemic symptoms, such as fever, arthralgias and weakness, 3,11 but usually did not have an internal association.…”

“…The localized variants comprise five subtypes including discrete papular LM, acral persistent papular mucinosis, juvenile and adult variant of self-healing papular mucinosis, papular mucinosis of the infancy and nodular LM [3, 4, 2, 5]. As the morphology of the case reported herein does not fit well into the localized variants as described, we would assign our observation to the third group of the atypical forms of mucinoses.…”
