Estima-se entre 5 a 30 milhões as espécies de insetos existentes no mundo, os quais são historicamente objetos de diversos estudos pois colonizam praticamente todos os nichos ecológicos e o seu estudo depende da sua coleta, preservação e identificação. Por isso, as coleções entomológicas são necessárias, servindo como repositórios de espécimes de insetos coletados, preservados e organizados para fins científicos, educacionais ou de referência. Essas coleções são frequentemente utilizadas por entomologistas, pesquisadores e estudantes em estudos que englobam a diversidade de insetos, a taxonomia, a biologia, a ecologia e a distribuição geográfica de diferentes espécies. Desta forma, há uma iniciativa na Universidade Estadual do Centro-Oeste (UNICENTRO) em formar uma coleção didática e científica com o objetivo de fomentar informações ao público interessado. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é relatar e prospectar as informações adquiridas na formação da coleção entomológica da UNICENTRO. Atualmente, encontram-se depositadas na coleção didática 5826 insetos, em 11 ordens distintas, dentre eles mostruários de algumas das principais pragas florestais da região sul do Brasil, tais como a Sirex noctilio (vespa-da-madeira) e Hedypathes betulinus (corintiano). Conclui-se que as a coleção entomológica é uma ferramenta valiosa para a pesquisa científica, e para a conscientização sobre os impactos e a importância dos insetos nas atividades humanas.

I am delighted to announce the inaugural issue of Megataxa, a new journal designed for large monographic reviews and highly significant original papers reporting major advances in taxonomy. Megataxa aims to be a premium journal of high impact to encourage most important works in taxonomy. As a general journal of taxonomy, Megataxa will also include an editorial/correspondence section to allow announcements of major news, debates of highly significant issues, theory/method papers of general taxonomic significance, and biographic profiles for recently passed eminent taxonomists.

As part of a study on holothurians from the southern Gulf of Mexico, some Holothuria mexicana Ludwig, 1875 were obtained for gut analysis. In two of them, a couple of eulimids were located inside the main tube of the respiratory tree. They were identified as Megadenus holothuricola Rosén, 1910, described from the Bahamas Islands, based on five specimens attached to the respiratory tree of H. mexicana. The original description was brief with few details, the type material is lost, and the species has not been found again. In this contribution, this species is confirmed for Campeche Bay, Mexico. The adult shell is globular to conical, transparent, thin, and fragile. Megadenus smithisp. nov. from Palmyra Atoll, Central Pacific is described based on adult specimens. It differs from its congeneric species in its more robust shell, the pseudopallium does not cover the shell, and its short and contracted proboscis forms a thick disc. Further research on these eulimid parasites is now complicated in the southern Gulf of Mexico because of the holothurian population collapse due to over-exploitation of the fishery.
