Abstract:A self-organized "tipping bucket model" of driven flow in fractured media was employed to study the degradation of contaminant by a dynamic population of traps representing microbial activity in the subsurface. For divergent flows, an increase in the degradation rate by an order of magnitude decreased the contaminant concentration in the exiting drips by at most one-third, but for convergent flows, the increased degradation rate did not significantly reduce the contaminant concentration. † Part of the special … Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
