“…A patient was classified by them as "completely successful" if: (a) he was drinking in a controlled fashion and was exceeding a blood alcohol concentration of 0-07 per cent less than once a month, (b) he and his family or collateral were both extremely satisfied with his alcohol related behavior, and (c) the therapist and follow-up staff were satisfied that the patient was drinking in an essentially normal and moderate fashion. They categorized a patient as "moderately improved" if (a) he was drinking considerably less than before treatment but was still exceeding a blood alcohol concentration of 0*07 per cent perhaps once a week, (b) both the patient and his family or collateral rated the alcohol related progress as moderate, and (c) the therapist and follow-up staff were satisfied that moderate improvement in alcohol related behavior had taken place (Caddy and Lovibond, 1975). In the second study by Caddy and Lovibond, of the 20 patients assigned to the aversion plus self-regulation group, 38 per cent were rated as "complete success" at the end of twelve months.…”

It is still possible that more effective forms of intervention could raise the level of severity of dependence or problems for which moderation training is considered advisableª [71].…”
