Self-repairing mechanism of plastics

Abstract: The protection mechanism of a living body and man-made materials can be classified into two categories. One is a passive protection by which the body and materials are guarded by simple chemicals such as light absorbents, and the other is an active protection that repairs with metabolic reactions the internal injury suffered by many kinds of deterioration factors from the outside. Polyphenylene -ether was selected as a man-made material in which the metabolic reaction can be achieved in the atmosphere (21% of … Show more

“…One is the chemical structure of the chain end and the other is the catalyst (Na 2 CO 3 ) for acceleration of the reaction. Another example is poly(phenylene ether) (PPE) in which the repairing agent was regenerated by oxygen [26]. The polymer chain of the PPE was cut by a deterioration factor (such as heat, light, and external mechanical force) to produce a radical on the end of the scission chain.…”

“…(1) The research work on man-made materials with metabolism, which is introduced in this journal [48], is focusing on the self-repairing reaction, the metabolic reaction and the activities based on the information of DNA in a living body. Generally speaking, man-made materials are deteriorated irreversibly.…”

“…The passive protection system in polymers is illustrated in Fig. 11a [48]. In this system, the cause of the deterioration is due to the direct attacks on the additives in place of the polymer.…”

“…Dry also proposed the idea employing the hollow fibers containing repairchemicals [6,2], leading to the development of a self-repairing epoxy-composite by Pang and Bond [7]. The metabolic reaction method was proposed by Takeda et al employing polyphenylene-ether containing cupper complex [8]. They demonstrated that the deteriorated polymers by heat, light, and mechanical force, which have radicals at the chain end, are stabilized by a pre-mixed hydrogen donor, such as dibutylamine.…”
