Self-selected unrefined and refined carbohydrate diets do not affect metabolic control in pump-treated diabetic patients

Abstract: This study investigated whether unrefined or refined carbohydrate diets have any effect on metabolic control and on insulin requirement in near-normoglycaemic Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic out-patients on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy. Two females and 8 males (aged 27 +/- 9 years; diabetes duration 13 +/- 8 years; duration of insulin pump therapy 22 +/- 5 months; means +/- SD) participated in a randomised cross-over study with two 6-week periods on self-selected refined and unrefined c… Show more

“…Patients were asked to keep their body weight constant. At the end of the run-in period, at the end of the dietary training period and at the end of the 4-week blinded study period, patients completed a 3-day food diary as described elsewhere [21]. During the last day of these 3 days, patients collected a 24-h urine sampie.…”

“…It has been shown repeatedly that in patients with adequate preprandial insulin therapy the inclusion of sucrose in a mixed meal does not lead to a significant postprandial hyperglycemia [20, 21, 22, 23]. Even regular use of up to 40 g sucrose/day in the nutrition of intensively treated IDDM patients had no negative effect on metabolic control [24, 25, 26, 27]. …”
