Self-Sensing CFRP Fabric for Structural Strengthening and Damage Detection of Reinforced Concrete Structures

Abstract: This paper presents a concept of a Self-sensing Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (SCFRP) system, which integrates the piezoceramic transducers with the common concrete strengthening materials, CFRP fabric. This integration provides the SCFRP fabric with the ability to monitor the structural health condition when the SCFRP fabric is applied on reinforced concrete structures. In order to validate the feasibility of this system, several three-point bending beam (3PBB) specimens were fabricated and tested before an… Show more

“…Because of the piezoelectricity effect, a PZT patch can be used as either a sensor or an actuator [51], and a PZT patch can generate and detect stress waves [34,42,52]. Traditionally, a PZT patch can be embedded inside a structure or bonded to a structural surface to conveniently enable the active sensing approach [53][54][55].…”

“…As a commonly used piezoceramic material, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) has been applied in structural health monitoring [31][32][33] due to its strong piezoelectric effect [34,35] and wide bandwidth [36,37]. With both sensing and actuation functions, PZTs are often used in active sensing methods for structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection.…”

“…Smart composite laminates synergistically integrate the preferential properties of the host laminates (e.g., high specific strength, high specific stiffness, fatigue resistance, design flexibility) and the smart sensing and actuation capabilities of the smart materials. Some contemporary engineering applications of the smart composite laminates are in the aerospace, automotive, marine, and robotics fields [1,2,3], among others Although smart composite laminates offer the advantages of self-sensing [4], diagnostics [5], vibration and noise suppression [6,7], shape control [8], and can respond to changing environments [9], they are also susceptible to various types of damage in the orthotropic host laminates as well as partial debonding failure of the smart elements [10]. Some frequent damages in laminated composites are delamination [11,12], matrix crack [13,14], fiber breakage [15], among others.…”

“…With recent advances in structure health monitoring [1,2,3,4,5] and damage detection [6,7,8,9,10], new technologies and methods has been proposed and developed. With the development of petrochemical industry and the implementation of the National Petroleum Strategic Reserve Plan in China, more and more tanks will be in construction and service.…”
