“…If variable cumulative displacement is typical of Quaternary faults, then either (1) slip rate uncertainties should include the contribution due to this variability, particularly for small data sets, or (2) faults should be subdivided into smaller sections with different, but more precise, slip rates. Such subdivisions could suggest that several geologically or seismologically distinct segments make up the larger fault (DuRoss et al, ; Manighetti et al, ). Unfortunately, cumulative displacement is rarely quantifiable along strike, especially for thrust faults, making this task impractical in situations where slip rate information is nonetheless important.…”
