Self‐Stabilized Nanoparticles of Intrinsically Conducting Copolymers from 5‐Sulfonic‐2‐Anisidine

Abstract: Novel copolymer nanoparticles with inherent self-stability, narrow size distribution, and high electrical conductivity are facilely and productively synthesized by the oxidative precipitation polymerization of 5-sulfonic-2-anisidine and aniline in acidic medium without any external stabilizer. The structures of the copolymer particles are systematically characterized by IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, laser particle-size analysis, atomic force microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microsc… Show more

“…With further increasing SA content from 50 to 100 mol %, drastically enhanced steric hindrance due to sulfo and methoxyl groups will destroy the symmetry of the polymer backbone, and consequently lead to significantly reduced conductivity. Compared with an earlier report, [11] the copolymers exhibit relatively low conductivity and different variation of conductivity with SA content. This is because the copolymer particles were heated at 60 8C for two weeks in this study, which leads to partial thermal dedoping of HCl.…”

“…The good solubility of PAN and all AN/SA copolymers Nmethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), [11] implies that the polymer particles may be processable in solution. On the other hand, most of the particles are only slightly soluble or even insoluble in HNO 3 (0.1 m), NH 4 OH (0.1 m), and water.…”

“…Moreover, when 2 and 1 mol% of oxidants were used, the polymers showed reasonable yields of 22 and 12 %, respectively. This is quite different to traditional chemical oxidative polymerizations of aromatics, which usually require quite high contents of oxidants (>100 mol%) to obtain high product yields [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. When a relatively highly concentrated FeCl 3 (20 mol%) was used, the polymer yields were decreased with extending polymerization time (>48 h).…”

“…Solubility (Table 1) This reveals that the PNA-LS composites exhibit solvatochromic properties, as the PNA-LS composites chains may have different conformations in different solvents and therefore different conjugation lengths [36,42,43]. In addition, the soluble PNA-LS composites will have great potential applications in biodegradability and corrosion protection [34].…”
