Self-Sustainability of Energy Harvesting Systems: Concept, Analysis, and Design

Abstract: Ambient energy harvesting is touted as a low cost solution to prolong the life of low-powered devices, reduce the carbon footprint, and make the system self-sustainable. Most research to date have focused either on the physical aspects of energy conversion process or on the optimal consumption policies of the harvested energy at the system level. However, although intuitively understood, to the best of our knowledge, the idea of self-sustainability is yet to be systematically studied as a performance metric. I… Show more

“…Their effectiveness depends on intermittent energy sources, converters, and energy storage to achieve steady energy flow to devices when the sources' supply of energy is interrupted. The quality of service (QoS) and energy consumption of sensor systems, the IoT [112], Cloud Computing [11], servers [84], and embedded systems [118] are of great interest for a "greener" ICT [106].…”

“…A wireless communication base station fully powered by renewable energy sources is modeled in [5]. In [38], a definition of "selfsustainability" is provided for an EH system, in terms of the mathematical characterization of the time until a system's energy may be depleted, causing an outage of the system. A twostage optimization approach is developed in [44] for the power-adaptive computer system which can use energy harvested from solar panels.…”
