Semantics-based services for a low carbon society: An application on emissions trading system data and scenarios management

Abstract: A low carbon society aims at fighting global warming by stimulating synergic efforts from governments, industry and scientific communities. Decision support systems should be adopted to provide policy makers with possible scenarios, options for prompt countermeasures in case of side effects on environment, economy and society due to low carbon society policies, and also options for information management. A necessary precondition to fulfill this agenda is to face the complexity of this multi-disciplinary domai… Show more

“…1 below, in the input stage, the energy structure of a company, as well as the amount and frequency of investments on technologies or equipment of energy-saving and emission-reduction have crucial and decisive impacts on the level of carbon risk. The efficiency of fossil energy, the number of carbon-related accidents in recent years, carbon trading mechanisms [32][33][34] and control policies for heavy-polluting industrial, etc., all affect the level of corporate carbon risk from different aspects in consumption stage. As for the output stage, the carbon emission risk and competitiveness risk constitute the carbon risk in this process.…”

“…EREON (Ets-Related European ONtology) [93] is an ontology for representing knowledge related to the European emission trading system (Ets). It includes concepts related to the Ets context (e.g., energy, low carbon technologies), to the policy making process, and to the computational tools to build possible future scenarios.…”

“…Camporeale et al [93] presented some semantic services for data acquisition and for the analysis of possible future scenarios related to the European emission trading system. For instance, they allow verification of ETS data correctness, ETS data mapping between different classification schemes, or the analysis of the impact on industrial sectors of different ETS policies.…”

“…Referring to the recognisability of terms, Christensen et al (2018) suggest to use simple vocabulary and metaphors that relate to everyday life while limiting sensational framing. Camporeale, De Nicola and Villani (2015) suggest to use sharable concepts and categories between multi-disciplinary fields. Whenever necessary, the specific terms should be clarified in appendices or glossaries.…”
