Semi-analytical and semi-numerical method for the single soil layer consolidation problem

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to present a simplified solution method for the elasto-plastic consolidation problem under different stress paths. Design/methodology/approach First, a double-yield-surface model is introduced as the constitutive model framework, and a partial derivative coefficient sequence is obtained by using numerical approximation using Gauss nuclear function to construct a discretization constitutive model which can reflect the influence of different stress paths. Then, the model is introduced t… Show more

“…Because the permeability of soft clay is very low, its consolidation process takes a long time to complete. Therefore, PVDs are conventionally applied to accelerate the consolidation of soft soil deposits (Hansbo, 1981;Bergado et al, 1996;Chai et al, 2001;Shen et al, 2005;Rowe and Taechakumthorn, 2008;Liu et al, 2014;Chen et al, 2016;Zhou et al, 2017;Cheng et al, 2017;Indraratna, 2017;Nguyen et al, 2018;Kim et al, 2018aKim et al, , 2018bKim, 2019a, 2019b;Nguyen, 2019;Nguyen, 2020;Nguyen et al, 2019;Nguyen et al, 2020;Li et al, 2020). To control the post-construction settlement, prediction of the consolidation behavior of PVDinstalled soft ground played a crucial role in the design stage.…”

“…In order to study deformation and strength characteristics of the soil under different stress paths, some scholars [8][9][10] have conducted site monitoring and stress path tri-axial tests. Based on the multi-path effect, Cheng [11][12][13] has studied deformation characteristics of clay under coupling multi-field. The results show characteristics of the soil exist significant difference under different stress paths.…”

“…The analysis and design of offshore structures includes the consideration of waves as the decisive loads. A realistic modeling of the wave loads is particularly important to ensure a sufficiently reliable performance of these structures [17,18]. Unfortunately, there are large variations in the wave load.…”
