Semi‐Lagrangian advection scheme with controlled damping: An alternative to nonlinear horizontal diffusion in a numerical weather prediction model

Abstract: This paper proposes a nonlinear horizontal diffusion scheme for models using semi-Lagrangian formulations. The scheme is made flow dependent and not entirely linked to the model levels. As an extension, the implementation of the scheme to the model Aladin is given. The damping abilities of interpolation are used for the diffusion filtering. The aim is to provide a horizontal diffusion scheme of similar stability and computational efficiency as the existing linear spectral diffusion scheme in Aladin. Preserving… Show more

“…The ALARO-0 model utilizes 1) the Action de Recherche Petite Echelle Grande Echell (ARPEGE) Calcul Radiatif avec Nebulosite (ACRANEB) scheme for radiation (Ritter and Geleyn 1992, recast in a Net Exchanged Rate framework), 2) a semi-Lagrangian horizontal diffusion scheme (SLHD) (Vana et al 2008), 3) some pseudoprognostic turbulent kinetic energy (pTKE) scheme (i.e., a Louis-type scheme for stability dependencies, but with memory, advection, and autodiffusion of the overall intensity of turbulence), and 4) a statistical sedimentation scheme for precipitation within a prognostic-type scheme for microphysics ). The physics package of the ALARO-0 model is coupled to the dynamics of the ALADIN model (Bubnova et al 1995) via a physics-dynamics interface based on a flux-conservative formulation of the equations proposed by Catry et al (2007).…”

“…A next step would be to implement an objectbased verification method, e.g. SAL (structure-amplitudelocation) (Wernli et al, 2008), which could provide more objective verification measures, but for this local spatial precipitation analysis, the method must first be developed.…”

“…Previous research on the occurrence of HPEs in the wider Adriatic region (e.g. Doswell et al, 1998;Romero et al, 1998;Vrhovec et al, 2001;Kozarić and Ivančan-Picek, 2006;Horvath et al, 2006;Mastrangelo et al, 2011;Mikuš et al, 2012) highlighted cyclonic activity in the western Mediterranean and Adriatic as a triggering mechanism for a range of extreme weather phenomena, including HPEs. The positions of cyclones that appear in the Adriatic Sea basin strongly influence the climate and weather conditions in the area (Horvath et al, 2008).…”

“…On the other hand, in the studied models there is for instance a numerical horizontal diffusion (see e.g. Váňa, 2003). It will be investigated in a subsequent study if this could play the role of φ 1 in (43).…”
