Glycerin is a major co-product resulting from biodiesel production, and it has been proposed as a highenergy source for use in swine diets. However, it is necessary to determine the nutritional value of neutral semi-purified glycerin (NSPG). In this study two experiments were carried out to determine the nutritional value, evaluated the performance and economic feasibility of starting piglets fed on neutral semi-purified glycerin. A digestibility trial (Experiment I) was conducted using 30 crossbred barrows with an initial average body weight of 42.91±1.58 kg. The glycerin levels used in the digestibility assay were 4, 8, 12 and 16% of the basal diet (corn + soybean meal based). The digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable (ME) energy values of glycerin were estimated by regression of DE and ME (kcal/kg) intake associated with glycerin vs. glycerin intake (kg). The values (as-fed-basis) of DE and ME (kcal/ kg) obtained were 3,298 and 2,531, respectively. In Experiment II, 100 piglets (50 gilts and 50 barrows) with BW = 15.14±0.06 to 30.28±0.65 were allotted in a randomized design using four inclusion levels (3.5, 7.0, 10.5 and 14%) of NSPG. There were ten replicates with two piglets per experimental unit. Additionally, a control diet containing no glycerin (0%) was formulated. The results show it is feasible to use up to 14% NSPG in piglet feed without impairing performance and plasma chemistry. No entanto é necessário determinar seu valor nutricional da glicerina semi-purificada neutralizada (GSPN). Neste estudo, foram conduzidos dois experimentos com o objetivo de determinar o valor nutricional, avaliar o desempenho e a viabilidade econômica de leitões alimentados com GSPN. O ensaio de digestibilidade (Experimento I) foi conduzido utilizando 30 suínos mestiços com peso vivo médio inicial de 42,91 ± 1,58 kg. -The objective of this study was to evaluate performance and carcass and meat characteristics of finishing pigs fed diets with different levels of glycerin, while maintaining the electrolyte balance. Forty barrows with an initial weight of 97.76±13.44 kg were distributed, in a randomized block design, into four treatments with five replicates. Treatments consisted of diets containing 0, 5, 10, and 15% glycerin. Inclusions of salt and sodium bicarbonate were adjusted to balance the sodium content and maintain the same electrolyte balance of the diets as a function of glycerin inclusions. In vivo backfat thickness, daily feed intake, daily weight gain, and feed conversion were measured. After the animals were slaughtered, pH and temperature were measured 45 min and 24 h postmortem, and backfat thickness, loin-eye area, drip loss, and colorimetry were determined. Glycerin inclusion levels did not influence the performance of barrows. Hot carcass weight, dressing percentage, and lightness had higher values when pigs were fed diets containing 2.32, 2.43, and 2.61% glycerin, respectively. The other carcass and meat characteristics were not influenced. Glycerin can be used in finishing pig diets without compromising results of performance or carcass and meat characteristics up to the inclusion level of 15%.

RESUMO:Glicerina é um líquido adocicado, higroscópico, inodoro, viscoso, energético, contendo variáveis níveis de glicerol, sendo utilizado como nutriente glicogênico ou lipogênico, dependendo da condição energética do animal. O glicerol ou 1,2,3-propanotriol é pertencente a função álcool, com três hidroxilas, de fórmula molecular C 3 H 8 O 3 . Em suínos, altos níveis de inclusão de glicerina podem proporcionar baixo conteúdo energético, pois o sistema enzimático da glicerol quinase torna--se saturado na conversão do glicerol para glicerol-3-fosfato, sendo o excesso excretado pela urina. A matéria-prima é um dos fatores que mais influenciam na composição da glicerina, podendo ser produzida a partir de óleo de soja, sebo bovino, gordura amarela e gordura de aves. Os componentes com maior participação na composição são glicerol, água e lipídios, contudo as limitações de seu uso na alimentação animal estão ligadas aos níveis residuais de sódio, potássio, metanol e umidade. Os níveis de glicerina bruta mais indicados para a viabilidade técnica e econômica estão em torno de 10%, sendo que acima de 15% compromete o desempenho e a viabilidade econômica. Por possuir características favoráveis e teores de energia em torno de 3.579 kcal/kg de energia metabolizável, a glicerina pode ser utilizada como ingrediente energético em rações para suínos. Glycerol, or 1,2,3-propanetriol, belongs to the alcohol group, with three hydroxyls, and the molecular formula of C 3 H 8 O 3 . In pigs, the inclusion of high levels of glycerin can provide low energy content, since the enzyme system in glycerol kinase becomes saturated in the conversion of glycerol to glycerol-3-phosphate, with the excess being excreted in the urine. The feedstock is one of the factors that most influence the composition of glycerin, which may be produced from soybean oil, beef tallow, yellow grease, and poultry fat.
