Semiclassical description of the shears mechanism and the role of effective interactions

Abstract: By deriving the angle between the proton and neutron spin vectors j ជ and j ជ in the shears bands in 198,199 Pb, we present a semiclassical analysis of the B(M 1) and B(E2) transition probabilities as a function of the shears angle. This provides a semiempirical confirmation of the shears mechanism proposed by Frauendorf using the tilted-axis-cranking model. In addition, we propose that the rotational-like behavior observed for these bands may arise from a residual proton-neutron interaction. ͓S0556-2813͑98͒5… Show more

“…The total angular momentum can be evaluated by imposing the energy minimization condition as function of θ and is given by I = a j+ 2 j cos θ + 1.5ℑV πν cos θ j − 6ℑV ππ cos 2θ cos θ n j (1) where, V πν is the interaction strength [42]. The hole-hole (proton-proton) attractive interaction is V ππ P 2 (2θ ) (4 th term) and has been assumed to be of the same form [42] with the additional boundary condition that it vanishes for θ = 0 [43]. This condition implies that in the present case, the particle-particle (neutron-neutron) interaction is absent.…”

“…Two theoretical approaches were proposed for the description of the observed experimental features: the tilted-axis cranking (TAC) model [4][5][6] and an empirical approach that assumes a particular effective interaction between high-spin particles and holes [2,8]. The TAC model is a mean-field approach that considers cases for which the angular momentum of a nucleus does not coincide with one of the principle axes.…”

“…The enhanced M1 transitions are due to the rotation of the magnetic dipoles around the total angular momentum [11]. In addition to the TAC model [9], these bands have been reproduced in terms of an effective interaction between the proton and neutron spins by Macchiavelli et al [12][13][14][15].…”
