Seminal vesicle abnormalities following prostatic artery embolization for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract: BackgroundProstatic artery embolization (PAE) has been proved effective in the treatment of lower urinary tracts (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with low complications, and most of the them are due to non-target embolization of adjacent organs, such as bladder, rectum, seminal vesicles and penis. Aim of this study was to present seminal vesicle (SV) abnormalities following prostatic artery embolization (PAE) for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.MethodsWe reviewed… Show more

“…Previous reports link its occurrence to the non-target embolization of seminal vesicles [ 2 ]. Ischemia of the seminal vesicles following PAE was described [ 36 , 37 ], but as all control MRI in this study did not show morphological/enhancement abnormalities of the SV in patients manifesting hematospermia, bleeding from necrotic prostatic tissue during ejaculation may not be excluded. This is why it was decided in this report to consider hematospermia as a post-embolization symptom rather than an adverse event.…”

“…In our experience, intermittent factor replacement provides satisfactory factor levels while helping to minimize the overall cost. Following PAE, transient hematuria and hematospermia can occur as minor complications in about 10% of patients (Moreira et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2018). To account for that, TA was added to the management plans as an antifibrinolytic agent with good effect.…”
