“…In melanomas, single melanocytes were mostly irregularly disposed, not equidistant from one another, in the basal layer as well as in the other epidermal layers, in effaced rete ridges; in naevi, single melanocytes were observed mostly in lentiginous pattern with cells as junctional single units in an elongated rete ridges [2]. Some parameters investigated showed a sensitivity higher than that found in a previous study (cytological atypia = 84%, dermal lymphocytic infiltrate = 56%, suprabasal melanocytes = 80%, asymmetry = 81%, mitoses = 33% and poor circumscription = 49% [22]), in which, however, melanomas were of lower thickness (r1.5 mm) and criteria used more restrictive than those adopted in this study. Conversely, suprabasal melanocytes showed a sensitivity (83% in the group of 72 melanomas and 95% in the subgroup of 20 melanomas r2 mm) lower or slightly lower than that obtained in another study (96%) [23].…”

“…He cannot use these features to make an algorithmic approach to the diagnosis of melanoma. Stolz and co‐workers illustrated this problem in an article in 1989 in which they examined 150 cases of melanoma using the seven attributes they considered most important diagnostically: 2…”
