Semisynthesis of Derivatives of Oleanolic Acid fromSyzygium aromaticumand Their Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Abstract: Oleanolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound widely found in plants and well known for its medicinal properties. Oleanolic acid (OA) was isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of Syzygium aromaticum flower buds. Semisynthesis afforded both acetate and ester derivatives. The derived compounds were monitored with thin layer chromatography and confirmed with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), Fourier infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and melting point (Mp). All these com… Show more

“…An alcoholic solution of the obtained acid is poured into a 5-fold volume of water to form a precipitate of AOA. The NMR data of the obtained crystalline product coincided with those known in the literature [21]. NMR 13 BA and OA are isolated from the outer bark or from the alcohol extract by a more polar solvent: diethyl or methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) together with betulin.…”

“…The active phenolic compounds gallic acid and quercetin reported previously in this plant [ 23 ] might have resulted this activity. Similarly, several other compounds isolated from S. cumini leaves, myricetin, quercetin, acetylated flavonol glycosides, triterpenoids and tannin have also been reported to possess analgesic property [ 33 , 34 ]. The analgesic activity shown by S. samarangen can also be correlated to the present study [ 35 ].…”

“…Acetate and ester derived compounds of oleanolic acid, a triterpenoid compound, isolated from ethyl acetate extract of clove, were tested for their anti-in lammatory activity against albumin injected Wistar rats. Both the derived compounds besides having analgesic effects inhibited right hind paw in lammation, the acetyl derivatives being more potent (Rali et al, 2016). Eugenol obtained from clove oil inhibited collagen induced arthritis in DBA1/J mice by inhibiting in iltration of mononuclear cells and reducing in lammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IFN-γ and TGFβ in the knee and ankle joints respectively (Grespan et al, 2012).…”
