Objectives Galectin‐3, a member of beta‐galactoside‐binding proteins, can be found in cytoplasm and nucleus as well as extracellularly in various tissues and involved in many physiological and pathological processes. We aimed to measure the serum levels of galectin‐3 in oral lichen planus (OLP) disease and compare the result with that observed in healthy ones. Materials and Methods In this cross‐sectional study, the serum levels of galectin‐3 were measured in 56 healthy individuals and 53 pathologically proven OLP patients including those with atrophic/erosive (33 cases) or reticular (20 cases) lesions, using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results Compared with healthy individuals (1.1 ± 0.4 ng/ml), galectin‐3 serum levels in patients with OLP (3.1 ± 1.1 ng/ml) were significantly elevated (p < 0.0001). Serum galectin‐3 levels were elevated significantly in patients with atrophic/erosive lesions compared to those of reticular (3.9 ± 2.1 ng/ml vs. 1.9 ± 1.4 ng/ml, p = 0.001), but it has not associated with age and gender. Conclusions The elevation of galectin‐3 in OLP is a future tool to increase the knowledge about the possible etiology of the disease and may be helpful to differentiate atrophic/erosive lesions from reticular ones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study evaluated the serum galectin‐3 levels in OLP.

Thyroid nodules are frequent in general population, found in 3.7-7% of people by palpation and 42-67% by ultrasonography (US). The differential diagnosis ranges from papillary (PC), follicular (FC) and medullary (MC) carcinomas to follicular adenoma (FA) and colloid goitre. Cancer risk in thyroid nodules varies: 5% in masses found by palpation, 1.6-15% by US, 3.9-11.3% by computed tomography (CT), 5-6% by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 30-50% by positron emission tomography (PET). The final diagnosis depends on fine needle aspiration (FNA) findings and histopathology. The recent WHO classification (2017) is based on classic morphology, including assessment of invasion and nuclei. New entities are defined to designate tumours with doubtful invasion or controversial nuclear features. By immunohistochemistry, PC expresses HBME-1, TROP-2, CITED1 and CK19. Notably, PC can stain for CD20. MC is recognised by neuroendocrine differentiation. To distinguish FA vs. FC, evaluation of HBME-1, p27 and galectin has been suggested. Regarding miRNAs, miR-146b, miR-222, miR-221 and miR-181b are upregulated, while miR-145, miR-451, miR-613 and miR-137 are downregulated in PC. FC features downregulated miR-199a-5p and upregulated miR-197 and miR-346. In MC, miR-21 and miR-129-5p are downregulated. In addition, increased systemic inflammatory reaction can be poor prognostic factor in thyroid cancer. The aim of this chapter is to review classic and innovative histopathology of thyroid nodules for diagnostic pathology practice and research in multidisciplinary thyroid teams.

Objective: This study aims to explore the clinical value of ultrasonic elastography in diagnosing thyroid carcinoma. Methods: Eighty thyroid carcinoma patients (100 nodules) admitted to a hospital were enrolled in this research. Routine ultrasonic testing and elastography were administered to all patients. The color and condition (benign or malignant) of the nodules were determined. The results were compared with pathogenic diagnosis of the operation. The specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of the two test methods were computed and statistically compared. Results: Pathological diagnosis of the operation suggested that among the 100 nodules, 70 were benign and 30 were malignant. The specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy of the routine ultrasonic check diagnosis were 50.00%, 53.33%, and 51.00%, respectively, whereas those of the ultrasonic elastography were 92.86%, 96.67% and 94.00%, respectively. The former was significantly (P<0.05) higher than the latter in all parameters. Conclusion: Ultrasonic elastography showed a significantly higher critical value in diagnosing thyroid carcinoma and could accurately identify nodules as either benign or malignant. Hence, ultrasonic elastography is worth further critical promotion and application.
